ORIENTASI BUKU
Dalam “Novel Love In The Kingdom Of Oil” ini Nawal mencoba menunjukan kepada para pembaca bagaimana eksitensi Perempuan mesir pada masa; yang marak dengan budaya patriarki. Singkatnya, Patriarki adalah struktur sosial, dan budaya yang didominasi oleh laki-laki dengan melakukan penindasan dan eksploitasi terhadap Perempuan (Wallaby, 1989). Masyarakat dengan struktur sosial patriarki mengatur segala hal tentang Perempuan, yaitu; mulai dari cara berpakaian hingga cara bersikap pun diatur oleh budaya patriarki. Hal ini jelas menindas dan merampas otonomi Perempuan.
Cerita dalam novel ini bermula dari sebuah berita yang beredar di surat kabar, tentang seorang Perempuan yang pergi melakukan cuti dan tidak kunjung kembali. Perempuan dalam novel ini adalah seorang peneliti yang bekerja di balai arkeologi yang tugas nya mencari mumi-mumi yang terkubur.
Suatu Ketika, orang-orang pun dibuat heran dengan kabar seorang Perempuan yang pergi melakukan cuti ini. Pada waktu itu Perempuan tidak bisa mengambil cuti, jika dia ingin melakukan cuti maka harus mendapatkan izin yang ditulis tangan oleh suaminya dan atasan tempat ia bekerja, hanya saja hal ini tidak berlaku bagi kaum lelaki mereka boleh-boleh saja pergi namun selama tujuh tahun lamanya tak kunjung kembali, maka sang isteri berhak membebaskan diri darinya. Berita mengenai Perempuan ini langsung ditangani oleh pihak kepolisian, alih-alih selebaran disebarkan dan iklan dipasang oleh polisi di surat-surat kabar untuk mencari Perempuan yang melakukan cuti ini. Polisi pun langsung menginterogasi sang suami dan atasan tempat Perempuan ini bekerja, polisi langsung melemparkan beberapa pertanyaan menyangkut Perempuan ini; apakah dia tipikal seorang Perempuan yang pembangkang dan pemberontak atau mungkin dia sedang dilema moral,tidak ada yang tau pasti mengapa si Perempuan ini pergi begitu saja meninggalkan sang suami dan rumahnya.
Pada alur cerita lain para pembaca akan di perlihatkan bagaimana perjalanan Perempuan ini mencari mumi-mumi yang terkubur di dalam tanah dengan bermodal sebuah pahat. Perjalanan mencari mumi-mumi ini mengantarkannya ke sebuah Desa yang dikelilingi oleh sebuah tambang minyak, di situ ia tinggal Bersama seorang lelaki, namun untuk tinggal bersama lelaki tersebut, ia harus membayarnya, yang notabennya mengerjakan pekerjaan domestik dan membantu meringankan pekerjaan si lelaki itu dengan membawa guci minyak di kepalanya. Namun tak hanya itu, si Perempuan ini hendak menolak untuk melakukan pekerjaan tersebut, sebab dia menegaskan bahwa dia adalah seorang arkeolog yang bertugas mencari mumi-mumi bukan pembawa minyak. Dan lagi-lagi Perempuan ini tidak diizinkan keluar dari Desa tersebut, kecuali ia membawa surat izin dari lelaki itu.
Perempuan itu beberapa kali mengganti pasangan, namun setiap hubungannya dengan semua laki-laki, selalu diakhiri dengan guci minyak yang duduk di kepala sang Perempuan tersebut tanpa sedikit iba.
Hingga saat Perempuan itu muncul kembali, para pembaca dihadapkan pada kaburnya jarak para laki-laki dalam hidupnya. Ia berganti-ganti suami hingga akhirnya Kembali ke suami pertamanya yang ternyata telah memiliki isteri baru.
Kelebihan buku :
dengan membaca novel ini akan menambah wawasan kita tentang isu-isu Perempuan yang di kemas dalam kata-kata yang sangat puitis.
Kekurangan :
Namun aku harus memberitahu bahwa dari pengalaman pribadiku dimana aku butuh berulan-ulang kali untuk membaca beberapa bagian-bagian yang membuat ku kebingungan dan tidak memahami apa yang di maksud si penulis, yah mungkin karena novel ini bergenre surealis.
