Penindasan terhadap perempuan masih selalu saja terjadi. penindasan perempuan sudah dimulai dari zaman dahulu hingga zaman sekarang atau dewasa ini. Akan tetapi, upaya untuk melawan penindasan dan memperjuang hak-hak perempuan tetap diperjuangkan oleh kaum perempuan.
Novel ini berdasarkan kisah nyata yang ditulis Nawal el-Sadaawi setelah bertemu seorang wanita di penjara Qanatir. Novel ini menceritakan kisah hidup seorang wanita bernama firdaus, seorang pelacur terdakwa hukuman mati karena kasus pembunuhan yang dilakukannya.
Pertama kali penulis mengunjungi firdaus menolak untuk menerimanya masuk ke dalam selnya, tetapi kemudian dia setuju untuk bertemu dengan penulis. Firdaus kemudian menceritakan kisah hidupnya dimulai dari kecil hingga alasan mengapa dia di dalam penjara dengan dakwaan hukuman mati.
Diceritakan dari masa kecil firdaus yang berasal dari keluarga miskin. Ayahnya seorang petani miskin yang tidak dapat membaca maupun menulis dan sedikit pengetahuannya dalam kehidupan.
Dia tahu bagaimana menunai hasil panen, bagaimana menukar anak perawannya dengan mas kawin bila masih ada waktu, bagaimana meraih tangan ketua kdelompok dan berpura-pura menciumnya, dan bagaimana memukul istrinya serta, memperbudaknya tiap malam.
Seperti di jelaskan bagaimana ayah firdaus yang memiliki watak licik, kejam, dan tega terhadap anak dan istrinya.
Setiap Jum’at pagi dia mengenakan sebuah galabeya yang bersih menuju masjid untuk salat berjamaah mingguan.
firdaus melihat ayahnya dan laki-laki lain pergi untuk ke masjid dan mendengarkan khutbah. menurut firdaus, Sang imam yang berbicara sampai melebihi hal-hal yang tidak dapat terlampaui.
Menurutnya, bukankah benar bahwa mencuri merupakan perbuatan buruk, dan membunuh perbuatan jahat, dan merampas kehormatan wanita merupakan perbuatan jahat, juga ketidakadilan, dan memukul manusia lain itu merupakan perbuatan jahat?
Firdaus merasa hal-hal tersebut merupakan perbuatan jahat akan tetapi, realita yang terjadi tidak sesuai yang dia alami. Terutama di dalam lingkup keluarganya, yang dimana perlakuan ayahnya terhadap anak dan istrinya tidak mencerminkan perilaku yang seperti apa yang dikatakan sang imam dalam khutbahnya.
Hal yang biasa dilakukan firdaus sebelum matahari muncul dari langit yaitu mengangkat kendi tembikar dan pergi mengisinya dengan air, kemudian membawa dengan menjunjungnya di atas kepala. kadang-kadang saking beratnya, leher firdaus tersentak ke belakang, ke kiri atau kanan.
biasanya firdaus juga membawa pupuk ke ladang dan firdaus lebih suka itu. Diladang firdaus dapat bertemu dengan Muhammadain, mereka bermain “pengantin perempuan dan pengantin laki-laki” di sebuat teratak kecil yang terbuat dari batang-batang pohon jagung. Mereka bermain sampai matahari tenggelam dan berjanji akan datang lagi keesokan harinya akan tetapi, ibu firdaus tidak menyuruh firdaus ke ladang lagi.
Pada hari membakar roti, firdaus akan membuat adonan tepung untuk membuat roti. adonan dibuat dilakukan dengan berjongkok dengan palung di jepit diantara kedua pahanya.
suatu saat ketika membuat roti, firdaus tidak menyadari tangan pamannya pelan-pelan bergerak dari balik buku yang sedang dia baca menyentuh kaki firdaus. tangan itu kemudian menjelajahi kaki sampai paha, Dimulai dari sinilah awal mula konflik novel ini. firdaus yang hanya pasrah dengan yang di lakukan pamannya.
Konflik yang terjadi dalam novel ini hampir mirip dengan setiap lelaki yang ditemui oleh firdaus yang ujungnya hanya di jadikan pemuas hasrat dengan yang didapatkan secara cuma-cuma. Hingga akhirnya firdaus sadar bahwa lelaki ini rela membayar untuk memuaskan hasratnya. Akhirnya, firdaus menjadi pelacur yang dimulai dihargai dengan harga murah hingga firdaus menjadi pelacur kelas atas yang memiliki harga tinggi.
Menurut saya, novel ini sangat menarik untuk dibaca karena menyajikan cerita perjalan hidup firdaus yang berjuang untuk hidup sebagai pelacur di lingkungan dimana perempuan masih belum di hargai dalam status sosial. Novel ini juga memiliki banyak menggunakan majas dalam menggambarkan keadaan yang dialami firdaus dan lingkungan yang terjadi di sekitar firdaus yang membuat pembaca seolah dapat merasakan apa yang di rasakan firdaus pada saat itu.
