WiFi Kampus Lelet, Ini Penyebabnya
Makassar, cakrawalaide.com — Beberapa bulan terakhir ini banyak mahasiswa mengeluh akibat fasilitas internet yang disediakan kampus tak maksimal, terutama mahasiswa angkatan baru, pasalnya sebelum masuk di Kampus UMI, salah satu kampanye UMI adalah melimpah-ruahnya pelayanan dan fasilitas-fasilitas yang dimiliki, salah satunya adalah Free WiFi untuk menunjang sistem perkuliahan dan akademik. namun sampai saat ini pelayanan internet cepat, belum juga dirasakan oleh mahasiswa.
Menurut Takdir, Kepala Bagian IT (Information and Technology) UMI mengatakan bahwa penyebab utama dari leletnya pelayanan internet kampus adalah belum siapnya sarana dan prasarana karena kantor bagian IT baru dipindahkan, dari lantai tiga Perpustakaan Utsman bin Affan ke lantai sepuluh Menara UMI.
“kita baru memindahkan seluruhnya awal Februari tahun ini, dulu kantor di lantai tiga perpustakaan, sekarang disini” ujarnya
Disamping itu IT UMI baru saja mengganti provider (penyedia jasa internet) dalam hal ini TELKOM tidak bekerja sama lagi dengan UMI, dan di gantikan dengan Indosat Company dalam hal ini Lintas Arta.
Kemudian yang ketiga adalah kuota untuk keseluruhan di wilayah UMI adalah 35 mbps (Mega Byte per Second) atau 35.000 kbps (Kilo Byte per Second) dengan kemampuan tersebut sangat sulit untuk memenuhi kebutuhan seluruh mahasiswa UMI yang berjumlah kurang lebih 17.000 orang.
“Sangat sulit, katakanlah jumlah mahasiswa UMI 17.000 dan sebagai user kira-kira 15.000 orang, jadi setiap mahasiswa hanya mendapat 2,30 kbps per orangnya” ujar Takdir, yang juga dosen di Fakultas Teknologi Industri ini.
Namun mahasiswa tidak mutlak mendapat kuota sekecil itu, Takdir kemudian memberlakukan sistem, dimana mahasiswa harus mendaftar dan diberikan password untuk menikmati layanan internet. seperti yang diberlakukan sebelumnya. ia juga membagi dua jenis pengguna, mahasiswa dan pengguna umum.
“mahasiswa yang mendaftar di kantor kemudian diberikan password. bagi mahasiswa yang telah mendapatkan password, telah fix mendapat 12 kbps/orang. namun jika belum mendaftar maka tetap berebut kuota yang tersedia” katanya.
Untuk menambah kuota yang ada membutuhkan biaya yang besar, untuk saat ini, dengan kuota 35 mbps, UMI telah menggelontorkan uang sebesar Rp.800 juta.
Mengingat banyaknya keluhan-keluhan mahasiswa, Takdir Sebagai Kepala IT UMI akan berjanji memperbaiki dan mengevaluasi sistem yang ada.
