Judul film ini diambil dari judul buku buatan Victor Hugo Green yang berjudul The Negro Motorist Green Book yang menjadi panduan untuk para pelancong kulit hitam, yang ingin melakukan perjalanan ke daerah-daerah yang penuh rasis dan diskriminatif terhadap orang kulit hitam.
Green Book berlatar belakang di era 1960-an kala hukum Jim Crow yang di rancang oleh kaum kulit putih untuk menjaga agar kaum kulit hitam tak berdaya dan terpecah-pecah masih berlaku di Amerika.
Di awal film menceritakan Tentang seorang mantan tukang pukul di klub malam dari Bronx, Tony Vallelonga yang membutuhkan pekerjaan baru setelah tempat kerjanya ditutup karna sedang di renovasi.
Di lain sisi, Dr.Don Shirley, seorang pianis jazz berbakat ingin melakukan tur untuk mengubah pandangan warga kulit putih terhadap warga kulit hitam melalui penampilan musiknya.
Singkat cerita Tony pun ditawari bekerja untuk menjadi sopir sekaligus bodyguard bagi Dr.Don Shirley yang akan melakukan tur musiknya dari Manhattan ke deep shouth selama dua bulan.
Selama perjalanan tur, Tony dan Dr. Shirley menghadapi banyak sekali perbedaan. Bukan hanya warna kulit mereka yang berbeda, namun karna sifat mereka juga bertolak belakang.
Meski begitu, Tony selalu membela Dr.shirley saat ia mendapat perlakuan Diskriminatif dari orang kulit putih.
Seiring berjalannya waktu, perbedaan ini berubah menjadi persahabatan.
Meski termasuk film biografi, namun film ini dikemas dengan sangat menarik, mulai dari sisi cerita hingga sisi dramatiknya.
Selain itu penonton juga disuguhkan dengan bumbu- bumbu komedi di sepanjang alur cerita. Penambahan unsur komedi ini juga membuat tema soal rasisme yang terdengar begitu berat, berubah menjadi kisah yang ringan, menghibur, namun tetap memberikan pesan moral yang mendalam.
Dari film ini, kita dapat melihat bagaimana rasisme itu sangat berbahaya dalam kehidupan sosial.
Adapun rasisme itu adalah perbedaan perilaku dan ketidaksetaraan berdasarkan warna kulit, ras, suku, dan asal-usul seseorang yang membatasi atau melanggar hak dan kebebasan seseorang.
Kenapa rasisme berbahaya?
Karna pemikiran rasis bisa membuat seseorang punya prasangka buruk terhadap ras tertentu. Bahkan rasisme mengawali banyak peristiwa mengerikan dalam sejarah dunia. Seperti pembantaian Yahudi oleh Nazi.
Perlakuan rasis kepada warga hitam di Amerika serikat menjadi catatan sejarah yang pastinya tidak diingkari oleh siapapun. Barangkali bukti yang paling nyata adalah bangkitnya warga Afro melakukan perlawanan di bawah kepemimpinan Martin Luther King Jr, Malcom X, dan lain-lain di tahun 60-an.
Perilaku rasisme harus dihindari untuk mencegah terjadinya sebuah perpecahan di dalam suatu lingkungan masyarakat, ataupun ancaman untuk diri sendiri. Dengan menghindari perilaku rasisme, lingkungan masyarakat akan terasa lebih tenang dan nyaman.
Sebelum menyalahkan orang lain atau memaksa orang lain, ada baiknya kita merubah perilaku untuk menghindari terjadinya rasisme. Misalnya menyadari bahwa setiap orang memiliki banyak perbedaan, rasakanlah hal yang akan terjadi jika dirimu berada di posisi orang yang dibedakan dan pilihlah teman tanpa membeda-bedakan status sosial, ras, agama, ciri fisik dan lain sebagainya.
