Stranger things adalah serial sains-fiksi. Stranger Things berlatar belakang di sebuah Kota Hawkins, Indiana pada awal tahun 1980-an.
Terdapat sebuah laboratorium nasional Hawkins yang dijadikan sebagai tempat penelitian ilmiah untuk Departemen Energi Amerika Serikat, bertujuan untuk melibatkan subjek uji coba pada manusia untuk eksperimen tentang supranatural serta paranormal. Sehingga dalam uji coba tersebut terjadilah sebuah kegagalan yang membuat portal ke dimensi lain disebut dengan “The Upside Down” menyebabkan terhubungnya dua dunia secara bersamaan
The Duffer Brothers mengembangkan ” Stranger Things” sebagai campuran drama investigasi dan elemen supernatural yang digambarkan dengan suasana horor, fiksi ilmiah, dan kepekaan, kekanak-kanakan.
Berlatar pada tahun 1980-an, Duffer Brothers memasukkan referensi ke pop kultur dari dekade itu, sementara tema dan aspek penyutradaraan terinspirasi oleh karya Steven Spielberg, David Lynch, Stephen King, Wes Craven dan H.P. Lovecraft. Mereka juga mengambil inspirasi dari eksperimen yang dilakukan saat Perang Dingin dan Teori konspirasi yang melibatkan eksperimen rahasia pemerintah.
Musim pertama menggamabrakan kondisi pada tahun 1983. Stranger Things yang dirilis pada tanggal 15 Juli 2016 menceritakan seorang anak laki-laki Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) yang diculik oleh sebuah makhluk supranatural dari dunia The Upside Down yang disebut sebagai Demogorgon yang disebabkan oleh Laboratorium National Hawkins.
Oleh karena itu, Ibunya Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder) melaporkan hal tersebut kepada Kepala Polisi Kota Hawkins Jim Hopper (David Harbour) untuk menyelidiki kasus ini.
Selain terjadinya penculikan pada Will ternyata teman dari kakaknya Mike, Nancy Wheeler (Natalia Dyer) yaitu Barbara Holland (Shannon Purser) juga diculik oleh makhluk yang Bernama Demogorgon.
Setahun kemudian, musim kedua pada Oktober 1984. Will telah diselamatkan, tetapi sedikit yang tahu mengenai kejadiannya. Ketika Will ditemukan, Will masih dipengaruhi oleh energi negatif dari Upside Down, teman dan keluarganya mengetahui ada ancaman yang lebih besar terhadap alam semesta mereka yang berasal dari Upside Down.
Musim ketiga ditetapkan beberapa bulan kemudian, di hari-hari menjelang perayaan Fourth of July pada tahun 1985. Pusat perbelanjaan “Starcourt” yang baru telah menjadi perhatian bagi penduduk Hawkins, membuat sebagian besar toko lain gulung tikar. Hopper menjadi semakin khawatir tentang hubungan Eleven dan Mike sambil tetap berusaha merawat Joyce. Tanpa diketahui ke kota, sebuah laboratorium rahasia Soviet di bawah Starcourt berusaha untuk membuka pintu gerbang ke Upside Down, memungkinkan entitas dari Upside Down untuk memiliki orang-orang di Hawkins dan menciptakan kengerian baru untuk dihadapi.

Selain menonjolkan kisah persahabatan dari keempat anak sekolah tersebut, kita akan dibawa ke dalam cerita yang menegangkan, terutama dari season 1 hingga season 4.
Serial sains-fiksi ini menyajikan kepada penonton bukan hanya perjuangan eleven dan teman-teman lainnya melawan para monster dimensi lain yang biasa di sebut dengan upside down. Tapi juga memperlihatkan kepada kita, bagaimana kondisi psikologis, kesehatan mental yang mendalam terhadap manusia dan mengangkat isu menarik mengenai teknologi industrial, yang mencoba merusak keseimbangan alam.
Ada juga beberapa konflik yang terjadi dan berusaha mereduksi manusia hingga ke titik dramatis, kehidupan yang menyedihkan.
