Novel ini merupakan sekuel dari negeri para bedebah yang ditulis oleh tere liye. Novel ini bercerita tentang Thomas yang merupakan karakter utama seorang pemilik perusahaan jasa konsultan keuangan kemudian mengembangkan perusahaannya ke jasa konsultan politik. Jasa konsultan politik yang dijalankan Thomas sangat terkenal karena telah dua kali memenangkan konstestasi politik dalam negeri. Thomas menjalani agenda menjadi pembicara sebagai konsultan politik dalam forum seminar yang dilaksanakan di Hong kong. Setelah mengikuti seminar, Thomas mengikuti sparing dengan lee, seorang juara bertahan dalam club fighting yang didatangi oleh Thomas.
Setelah menjalani pertarungan semalam, Thomas menunggu kapal baru yang telah diberikan oleh opa, kakek Thomas. Thomas senang dengan kapal barunya, karena kapal lamanya telah hancur ketika kejadian setahun yang lalu. Tidak lama kemudian seseorang tidak dikenal datang tanpa mengetuk pintu. Dia memperkenalkan diri sebagai wartawan salah satu majalah terkemuka di Kawasan Asia Pasifik, Maryam. Tidak lama klien Thomas menelpon. Klien Thomas memberitahukan bahwa terjadi maneuver besar-besaran dalam peserta konvensi partai. Ternyata kerjaan Thomas membantu klien politiknya untuk menjadi orang nomor 1 di negara itu. tidak semudah membalikkan telapak tangan. Klien Thomas memperingatkan banyak ancaman dan terror yang dialami Thomas selama menjadi konsultan politik kliennya ini.
Tidak disangka ketika Thomas belum lama menutup telpon dari kliennya dan menikmati kapal barunya Bersama opa dan Maryam. Tiba-tiba sekelompok pasukan khusus dari Angkatan militer menyergap Thomas kemudian memerika seluruh isi kapal. Kadek diborgol dan diseret masuk kedalam kabin. Setelah memeriksa beberapa saat, mereka akhirnya menemukan sebuah kotak dan membongkar isi dari kotak tersebut. Dalam kotak itu berisi bungkusan yang dalam nya terdapat butiran putih kecil. Petugas selanjutnya menemukan karung berisi granat, C4 dan beberapa pucuk senjata. Akhirnya mereka ditangkap dan dibawa ke sebuah bangunan Apartemen tua. Thomas merasa ancaman yang dikatakan klien telah mulai.
Dalam menghadapi ancaman dan terror yang terjadi, Thomas ditemani oleh Maryam, gadis wartawan yang secara tidak sengaja ikut dalam pusaran konflik yang dihadapi oleh Thomas. Konflik yang dihadapi tidak serta merta membuat Thomas menjadi takut. Thomas sadar bahwa ini adalah konsukuensi menjadi konsultan politik. Thomas tetap menghadapi setiap masalah hadir dengan cara-cara yang menarik dan elegan. Oleh karena itu, tugas Thomas yang sekarang adalah memenangkan klien nya dalam kontestasi politik yang akan datang dan mengungkap dalang dari konflik yang datang kepada dirinya dan kliennya.
Kelebihan
Novel ini memberikan gambaran bagi kita bagaimana cara kerja konsultan politik. Cara kerja yang digambarkan tidak terlalu terlihat ketika di awal cerita, akan tetapi pada saat pertengahan sampai akhir cerita baru tergambarkan bagaimana cara kerja konsultan politik itu. Mulai dari bagaimana menggiring isu, membuat opini yang mendukung elektabilitas calon, sampai langkah apa yang boleh dan tidak boleh dilakukan oleh klien untuk mendapatkan dukungan masyarakat. Konsultan politik juga yang digambarkan, bekerja untuk bagaimana menjatuhkan lawan politik dari klien sehingga klien tetap menjadi yang diunggulkan dalam kontestasi politik.
Gambaran yang diberikan dengan tambahan bumbu aksi dan petualangan yang membuat cerita novel menjadi tidak membosankan. Penulis juga memberikan deskripsi setiap situasi yang membuat kita dapat berimajinasi suasana yang dialami setiap karakter. Tidak lupa juga yang menarik dalam novel ini, penulis juga sering memberikan plot yang tidak terduga sebagai solusi dari permasalahan dari cerita.
Kekurangan
Menurut saya, ending dari cerita ini masih kurang greget, karena penulis sepertinya bingung untuk menutup cerita ini maunya seperti apa. Sehingga penulis mungkin dari sekian banyak opsi, penulis lebih memilih menutup cerita dengan mempertemukan Thomas dengan kakek lee yang pernah disinggung di awal cerita. Kakek lee menutup cerita dengan memberikan wejangan tentang kehidupan untuk membuat Thomas agar terus menjalani kehidupan dalam kemuliaan.
Kesimpulan
Jika kalian tertarik dengan cerita yang bertema politik, mungkin saya sangat merekomendasikan novel ini untuk kalian baca. Walaupun buku ini sekuel dari buku pertama, tapi kalian bisa langsung baca buku ini tanpa perlu membaca buku pertamanya. Dalam buku ini akan tetap menyinggung cerita dari buku yang pertama, karena konflik atau permasalahan dalam buku ini berkaitan dengan tokoh antagonis di buku yang pertama. Akan tetapi, kalo kalian penasaran apa yang memulai konflik dari dua buku ini mungkin kalian dapat membaca buku yang pertama supaya kalian tidak penasaran dengan konflik yang terjadi. Silahkan kalian beli di toko buku terdekat di kota kalian, kemudian baca dan berikan pendapat kalian ya!
